STEFAN’S LAW
Item Code : SN1160
Principle and Working:
According to Stefan’s law power radiated from a black body is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature.
i.e. P ∝ T4
or log P ∝ 4 log T (1)
Resistance of the tungsten filament of the electric bulb is
R ∝T
Or log R ∝ log T (2)
From equation (1) and (2)
log P/log R = 4

An experiment that analyzes an incandescent light bulb’s voltage (V) and current (I) to calculate its resistance (R) and power (P) under various conditions is used to validate Stefan’s Law. Plotting log P vs log R (or log T) after calculating the logarithms of P and R (or T) should yield a straight line with a slope near 4. This indicates that, in accordance with Stefan’s Law, the power radiated is proportional to the fourth power of the absolute temperature.
- To verify Stefan’s law of radiation.
