FARADAY EFFECT EXPERIMENT WITH DIODE LASER

Principle and Working:
If a transparent isotropic material is placed in a strong magnetic field and linearly polarized light is transmitted in the direction of the magnetic field, the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light rotates by an angle.
The angle of rotation (Ø) of plane polarized light is proportional to the length (L), magnetic field (B) and Verdet’s constant (V).

- Observing the rotation of the polarization plane when polarized monochromatic light passes through flint glass under influence of a magnetic field.
- Determining Verdet’s constant from the relation between rotation angle and magnetic flux.

- Electromagnet coil : 500 T coil, 7Amp (Max.), 18SWG, Cu.
- Electromagnet Core : Ferromagnetic, 40x40mm cross section.
- Optical bench : Length – 1 mtr. with Scale, 4 point levelling. Material Aluminium or MS.
