Zeeman Effect

Item Code : SK075/SK075A

Principle and Working:

The Zeeman effect refers to the splitting of atomic energy levels under an external magnetic field, influenced by orbital and spin angular momentum or Bohr’s Magneton. In this setup, the normal Zeeman effect is studied, which demonstrates the splitting of energy levels observed as spectral lines corresponding to electron transitions. Instead of a single spectral line (as seen without a magnetic field), a triplet appears perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a doublet appears parallel to it, with a very small wavelength difference. The 546.1 nm wavelength of Mercury light splits under a strong magnetic field, and this splitting in transverse and longitudinal directions is observed via a CMOS camera on a computer. The Bohr Magneton is then calculated from the experimental measurements.
