KERR EFFECT EXPERIMENT
Item Code : SK019
Principle and Working:
Certain materials become doubly refractive under the influence of a strong electric field. This phenomenon, known as the Kerr effect, can be observed in this experiment using a nitrobenzene solution. In Kerr Effect setup, a small glass container, mounted with a plate capacitor, is filled with liquid. The container is placed between two filters positioned at 90° to each other. Initially, the field of view on the screen appears dark. However, when an electric field is applied, the field of view brightens because the light beam becomes elliptically polarized as it passes through the birefringent liquid.
